In a world that can be casually cruel, it’s important to practice self love. It’s important to set boundaries, indulge in self care practices and be nice to yourself. The best thing about self love is that it can look different for us all. For some it can be a bubble bath, for others it can be splurging on an item that you’ve wanted for a while. As long as what you do doesn’t cause you any detriment, you’re engaging in it. Self love does get blurry if you wake up one day and realize you’re Rebecca Bloomwood in Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009).
Self love is vital no matter your age or job. It can not only help you decompress, it can help you be aware of bad relationships. When we practice self love, we know what’s real and can differentiate between people who aren’t kind to us or don’t have our best interests in mind. It can help you stave away bad friends, horrible romantic partners and give you the ability to set boundaries between yourself and family members. Self love can also imbue you with self respect and when we respect ourselves, we treat ourselves better—we can leave jobs that don’t fulfill us, ask for that promotion, move to a new city and make our physical and mental health a priority. Self love keeps us intact, it keeps us going and it can help make life a lot more bearable .
